Tamil film ‘Visaaranai’, which has won three national awards, is now India’s official entry to Academy Awards in Foreign Language Film Category. Visaaranai is selected by Film Federation of India.
The film is written and directed by Vetrimaaran and is produced the Dhanush. The film is based on the novel ‘Lock Up’ by M Chandrakumar. It narrates the story of a group of immigrants who were arrested and tortured to confess the crime they haven’t committed.
Visaraanai won three awards at the 63rd National Awards this year – Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Supporting Actor (Samuthirakani) and Best Editing (Kishore Te). Last year, a Marathi film Court was selected for the official entry to Oscars. Visaaranai was premiered in 2015, at 72nd Venice Film Festival, where it had won the Amnesty International Italia Award.
