Bollywood clashes are becoming more frequent than ever as everyone wants to have a bigger monetary pie on festival release dates. The problem is not just the clash itself but it’s the fights and controversies that get associated with it which impure the intentions of cinema and movies.
Shah Rukh Khan’s yet untitled film (Maybe ‘The Ring’) was scheduled to release on 11th August, the Independence Day weekend. This is one of the biggest weekend of the year for films as audience give massive response to movies in this period.
Now, Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which was supposed to release on 2nd June, is also releasing on 11th August. If you analyze the situation of both the films, things get clearer as to what will happen to the business of these films.
Shah Rukh Khan’s movie clearly has an upper hand over Akshay’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. It’s an entertainment film with Shah Rukh so it is naturally going to be huge, with 130 crore collections and beyond that. It also stars Anushka Sharma, who also has a huge fan following and SRK-Anushka’s pair has been successful in the past. Add to that, Imtiaz Ali as a director, who is respected by the masses. So, SRK’s film is bigger than TEPK.
Now, hold on. Don’t get decisive so fast. Sometimes, strengths can be proven as weaknesses. There must be some reason why the makers of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha decided to take on Shah Rukh. No one is interested in box office losses. TEPK is a small film and has a social topic at hand. It won’t have as much buzz as Akshay Kumar’s films normally have but we think, the film will be strong in content. The makers needed a bigger release with holiday so that the message of the film can be reached to the maximum audience.
The film is also based on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ so releasing it on Independence Day might have a huge positive social impact. Tax-Free is already on the cards.
Now, coming to the monetary aspect of TEPK, Akshay Kumar is a very punctual actor. He completes the shoot in quick time so the overheads and costs are always in check. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will easily recover its costs in Independence Day Weekend itself. So, the profitability will be instantly achieved. That could not have been possible if they had released the film on 2nd June, maybe it would have taken ample time and there was also Salman Khan’s Tubelight release after 3 weeks.
Also, as a small film, TEPK won’t have as much to lose from this clash as Shah Rukh Khan would have. TEPK would become a Hit within a week. On the other hand, SRK-Anushka’s film is huge in budget and they have shot most of the movie in overseas locations. So, even if it earns in the range of 20 crore/day in that weekend and touches the 100 crore mark, it will still need to go beyond that to become a clean hit.
What we are trying to say is that if this clash is on (There is a possibility that someone might postpone) in terms of buzz, SRK might have an advantage but Akshay Kumar won’t be outmatched as his film is promising in terms of topic and controlled budget.
Let’s see how this clash fares at the box office. What do you think?
