Review – xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Director: D. J. Caruso

Cast: Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Samuel L. Jackson

You take story for granted, you take characters for granted but you can’t take audience for granted. There is nothing in xXx: Return of Xander Cage that you haven’t already seen and there is not even a fraction thrill.

X’s (Xander) character in the film is written in such a way that he is undefeatable or some kind of superhero. I mean, it is permitted in action movies that the lead protagonist kills but he is hard to kill but in this film, even when he is surrounded by the whole gang of enemy, he is just so cool and showing all swag, which just takes away all the fun. There is no equally threatening enemy which will give somewhat tough battle to X in the movie, so the intensity was never going to be there.

X returns from dead for a mission to stop a gang which has stolen some top class stuff. Well, I would go into the plot but the film doesn’t have much to talk. The characters of Xiang, Serena, Nicks, Adele are typical underground rebel type and their conversations with each other during the action scenes are dozing. The script lacks the rush and mystery with the mission. Ridiculous thing is that they say Xander Cage is untrackable yet at next moment, they track him down at a click of a button. Moreover, Xander finding his team is also so easy like they are all just waiting all these years for his one phone call. Convenient!

D. J. Caruso hardly manages to make the mission any interesting. The team uniting and their quest are weakly executed. There is no tension into the plot as X seems to have it all figured out. There are only some scenes which are appreciable like in the start when Vin Diesel skates onto the road which is some mind-blowing stuff. Another one is in the end. That’s it. Rest of the action is ordinary. The storytelling is pretty predictable after a few minutes. The problem is that there didn’t feel any kind of effort taken to make the characters engaging; they are just added into the movie for fillers.

Vin Diesel does an Ok job in this one. He is great in action but when it comes to delivering the swag dialogues in this film, he is not really effective. Donnie Yen delivers fair role. Deepika Padukone was a good addition although initially she seemed a bit loose in dialogue delivery. But, as the film progresses, she neatly performs her role and her action avatar is also justified. Ruby Rose was perfect as a kick-ass shooter. They literally wasted Tony Jaa. He should have never done this film. He has a lot of action talent.

Conclusion:

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is a total let down. The movie doesn’t stand true in any movie department, neither in script, direction nor in action. The story lacks plotline, character development and execution. It’s a completely avoidable film.
