The day was 28th April 2017 when S. S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, a Telugu film dubbed in Hindi changed everything for Indian cinema. This epic grand movie went on to become India’s biggest film of all time. Its Hindi version’s total is 510 crore and all version’s total is 1050+ crore.
The fundamental problem that Bollywood is facing post Baahubali 2 release, is that its films are struggling at box office and with only a couple of movie exceptions, the period from May to August has been highly disappointing. Not a single big budget, big buzz and big star movie has managed to impress the audience and performed well.
The message is clear from Indian crowd, it needs content and a good entertainment that has sensibility. Not just that, even smaller films have not done well and some of them have even faced outright rejection. Some received good reviews but due to low buzz, couldn’t mint much.
From May to August, five big films were released: Half Girlfriend, Tubelight, Jagga Jasoos, Munna Michael and Jab Harry Met Sejal. None of them entered the profitable zone. Salman Khan’s Tubelight, one of the biggest films of 2017, is now Salman’s biggest disaster of this decade. Half Girlfriend too, couldn’t win the acceptance of audience and Jagga Jasoos, although received mixed reviews, has flopped at box office due to the big budget.
Munna Michael never saw any appreciation from the crowd. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal is also one of the biggest disasters of 2017. Audience completely rejected the movie and even critics panned it. JHMS is finding it hard to even touch the 70 crore mark, a rare thing to say for an SRK film.
Only Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium has become a clean hit. It has collected 69 crore which is big achievement for a content driven film with a mild buzz. The content is winning. Even Sridevi’s Mom has collected 33+ crore but it was expected to earn more. Sachin: A Billion Dreams also performed well with 50 crore total. Lipstick Under My Burkha, with only 6 crore budget, has surprised everyone and has minted 18+ crore.
With these exceptions, Bollywood is struggling big time and it’s a massive concern. Meri Pyaari Bindu, Sarkar 3, Raabta, Behen Hogi Teri, Bank Chor and Guest iin London were hardly any contributors in earnings.
This trend is hurting the reputation of Bollywood. It needs to improvize and come up with new concepts so that audience once again follows its credibility and turns up to theaters.
