Clashes, right? Last year it was Raees vs Kaabil and in 2018, it is Padmavat vs Padman on 25th January, 2018. It seems like Bollywood can’t avoid clashes as there are so many releases coming to entertain the audience. But this is something that will hurt the makers of Padman more than Padmavat.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavat is one of the most talked about projects from last year and majority of it was due to the constant controversies associated with it. From Karni Sena opposing it to almost all parties coming together to ban the release of the film, Padmavat’s 1st December release got postponed.
Even CBFC then suggested some minor cuts and the title of the movie has been changed from Padmavati to Padmavat. This periodic film has a big budget so it can’t really take much risks to further postpone the movie so 25th January release date seems to be final. However, we also don’t think Akshay Kumar will be changing his Padman’s release date now as the buzz for it is very much created. Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary’s release date has been shifted to 9th February, 2018 which is a good move.
Now, talking about the appeal and interest, Padmavat is a much bigger movie than Padman, despite Akshay Kumar being one of the biggest superstars of India. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a huge reputation for artistic and periodic movies. His last film Bajirao Mastani did a humongous business and now, Padmavat has the same cast of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone and to add to that, the brilliance of Shahid Kapoor is there.
The trailer of Padmavat was unanimously loved and the interest level for this film is sky high. There is still no mention about its screen count from trade or the makers but Padmavat will be looking to get equal or more screens than Padman. It has a big chance to collect around 200 crore at Indian box office.
Akshay Kumar is undoubtedly one of the most consistent and most bankable actors in Bollywood today. Without Padmavat clashing, it would have easily done 120+ crore business but now, things will change to some extent. It will still have the advantage of Republic Day holiday but we think, Padmavat will be having an upper hand in this competition.
Padmavat will be dominating the theaters just like SLB’s Bajirao Mastani did. But, it will need to sustain for long to recover its costs, which are massive. This is where Akshay Kumar will be having little worries as Padman’s costs are on lower side so entering the profitable zone won’t be a big problem for it.
There is still a possibility that any one the movie might get postponed but nothing is certain. We had written earlier that releasing a big film and a medium buzz film on holiday is a good move but two big movies on Republic Day holiday will be hurting the business of both the films.
While it may also seem unfair for Padman to clash with Padmavat as Padman’s release date was announced a long time ago, what happened with Padmavat was also not right. Let’s see how things pan out. We wish both of them a great box office run.
