After playing a gritty and majestic role in Padmaavat, the stunning actress Deepika Padukone is all set to play the acid victim survivor in Meghna Gulzar’s untitled movie.
Deepika will be portraying the role of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. In addition to playing the titular role, the actress has also decided to turn producer with the film.
The yet-untitled film will be based on the life of Laxmi, who was attacked at the age of 15 in 2005. Her assailant was a family acquaintance who bore a one-sided attraction towards her, which turned into a mortal grudge when the girl refused to accept the man’s advances.
Laxmi took up the job of helping the acid attack survivors and promoted campaigns to stop acid attacks. She even received the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2014 from the former First Lady of United States, Michelle Obama.
In 2006, Laxmi filed a PIL seeking framing of a new law or an amendment to existing criminal laws like the IPC, Indian Evidence Act and CrPC which deal with the offence, making a fervent plea for a complete ban on the sale of acid in India. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in Laxmi’s favor and laid down the punishment for acid-throwing — 10 years of imprisonment which can extend up to a lifetime, with a penalty.
It will be great to see Deepika playing the role of Laxmi and audience will get to see Laxmi’s brave story on screen. With Meghna Gulzar directing the film, who previously directed Raazi, this movie will be a great contribution to cinema and an inspiring one for all of us.
