The period of April-May 2017 will not be forgotten in Indian films’ history for a long long time as it has given us the most successful and the highest grossing film of all time in India. S. S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 released on 28th April, 2017 and it shattered all the box office records ever written for an Indian film.
Without any festival release or a big star, Baahubali 2 (Hindi) has collected 500+ crore so far at domestic market, the first ever film to do so in India. While the elite club openings like 100 crore, 200 crore, 300 crore and 350 crore have been credited to Aamir Khan, it was Baahubali 2 who opened the 400 crore, 450 crore and 500 crore clubs in India.
And that’s just Hindi total of this epic film. Its all version nett. total is 1030+ crore. Its worldwide total is 1660 crore. In India, Baahubali 2 is the highest grossing film of all time, beating Aamir’s Dangal. The difference between Baahubali 2 and Dangal is more than 100 crore and it will increase in coming days.

What’s interesting is that, when Dangal was on a record breaking spree in 2016, it was looking impossible to break its records but Baahubali 2 made Dangal looked like an easy beat in India. Of course, on a global box office, Dangal has surpassed Baahubali 2’s collections to become the top grossing Indian film.
Now, the most obvious question remains: Which film can break this gigantic record set by Baahubali 2 (Hindi)?
(Please note we are talking about Baahubali 2’s Hindi collections.)
Let’s analyze the following movies:

After Aamir Khan, it is Salman Khan who is known to rule the box office in India. Salman has a massive fan following and fans go berserk to watch his films in theaters. Salman’s Tubelight is releasing this Eid. Eid and Salman Khan’s films have turned out to be a grand combination in recent years. Salman’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kick and many more releases during Eid became highest grossers of the year. In fact, Bajrangi is the 4th highest grossing film of all time in India.
Now, coming to the buzz of Tubelight, it is highly positive and fans have loved the trailer. However, Tubelight’s story is emotional and unlike many Salman Khan’s films which have him as a macho action hero, this film shows his sweet side. So, there might be a concern for its acceptance across all the age groups and regions.
Tubelight will certainly go past the 300 crore mark if the reviews are good. Also, Eid holiday will give a big boost but beyond that, it will need unanimously positive word of mouth to sustain for 2-3 weeks. Tubelight can mint a lifetime total of around 300-340 crore but it can’t match Baahubali 2’s total.
Tiger Zinda Hai

Tiger Zinda Hai has a better chance to go for 400 crore and beyond than Tubelight. First of all, its a successful film’s sequel so the fan base for it is already established; secondly, its an out and out action film which attracts humongous crowd in India. The Indian crowd also loves the romantic pair of Salman and Katrina Kaif, so all in all, there are many aspects favoring Tiger Zinda Hai already.
With Christmas 2017 release, this film can touch the 360-380 crore mark. It can seriously come close to Dangal’s collections as in the period of 6-7 months, the ticket prices will increase. Dangal and Baahubali 2 had got unanimously positive reviews so Tiger Zinda Hai will also need them. But, even it won’t come close to Baahubali 2’s Hindi total.

Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 is a dark horse which can be a surprise package. The film is already postponed as director Shankar wants advanced visuals for the film. 2.0 can seriously come close to Baahubali 2’s collections.
Rajinikanth has the biggest fan following in South India. Then there is Akshay Kumar, who is one of the most popular and successful Bollywood actors today. The first part Enthiran (Hindi tittle:Robot) was loved by everyone and Shankar has a great directorial credibility. All these factors but most importantly, Rajini-Akshay’s combined stardom can set the box office on fire. 2.0 can collect 400+ crore collections for Hindi alone.
It will also need great reviews and the audience response but if everything goes well, it is the only film currently which can match or beat Baahubali 2’s Hindi collections.
How can you not talk about Aamir Khan’s film when there is a topic of record breaking movies? Aamir’s Thugs of Hindostan is releasing in Diwali 2018. While not much is known about the film yet and it will begin its shooting by June, 2017, Thugs of Hindostan can surely beat Baahubali 2’s total. Everytime Aamir’s films is released, it has set the new benchmarks in India. Let’s see how the box office of these films shape up.
