Many directors tend to cast a specific actor or actress in their films. Anurag Kashyap’s regular casting of Kay Kay Menon and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajkumar Hirani’s association with Sanjay Dutt and Aamir Khan and the same goes with Vishal Bhardwaj’s film having a lead role played by Shahid Kapoor.
Kaminey (2009), Haider (2014) and now Rangoon – this is a third time Vishal Bhradwaj is casting Shahid Kapoor. The duo have an excellent performance together with their films. Kaminey got a mixed response from the critics and audiences but the double role of Shahid as Charlie and Guddu won the hearts of people with their cunning and funny portrayal. ‘Main fa ko fa bolta hu’ and such amazing screenplay and direction from Bhardwaj made Kaminey a cult film. This was one of the most memorable performances of Shahid.
Then came Haider, a hard hitting film about insurgency hit Kashmir conflicts during 1995. Bhradwaj is a master in such storytelling which interweave love, tragedy and betrayal. Shahid Kapoor as Haider gave one of the best performances of his career and Haider went on to become top films of 2014. His ‘Chutzpah’ and weird role made the film a gripping combination of romance and horror. Another Bhradwaj-Shahid association magic.
Now, the duo is back with their third film together. Rangoon is a love triangle set in 1945, when India was fighting the battle for its independence. Rangoon has a typical marvelous Bhardwaj production design and story which as usual is an inspired Shakespearean narrative so it goes without saying that the film is going to take us for yet another beautiful and thrilling ride of romance and pain. Add to that, war, Shahid Kapoor and this time, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan, The cast of the film is brilliant and with Bhardwaj’s skillful direction and Gulzar’s lyrics, we have high hopes from Rangoon, Let’s see how the film fares.
