After Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Bollywood films have failed to create a mark at domestic box office. Only Naam Shabana managed to grab a decent total but those were also not impressive numbers (36 crore).
With Baahubali 2 storm continuing and overshadowing the new releases, it is expected that by this week, the scenario might change by a significant margin for Bollywood.
Two new movies are hitting theaters this Friday – Half Girlfriend & Hindi Medium. Half Girlfriend is the major release of the two, by screen count and buzz. Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel by the same name, the film has got a strong popularity at its disposal. Being a love story and directed by Mohit Suri, the young crowd is naturally interested for the movie.
Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor have a powerful fan base and Chetan Bhagat’s books and films based on them have a good connect with youth. Even the music of Half Girlfriend is being loved by audience, especially ‘Baarish’ and ‘Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga’.
After the success of ‘Aashiqui 2’, there are huge expectation from Mohit Suri for Half Girlfriend. Overall, it has many favorable aspects so it can take an opening in the range 8-9 crore. If the love story clicks with the crowd, the collections and occupancy can increase over the weekend and it can easily grab the 35+ crore opening weekend.
There is still a factor of how Baahubali 2 performs in its 4th weekend. If it is still getting a big response and Half Girlfriend’s story doesn’t work well, it will experience stiff competition from Baahubali 2. However, being in its 4th week, audience will look for a change for films so Half Girlfriend can be at an advantage there.
Another film releasing is Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium. It’s a strong content driven film, covering the issue of English language schools in India, our obsession to them and how education has become a business in our country.
Irrfan Khan is known to select good topics and his credibility as an actor is outstanding so Hindi Medium can make its mark if the story works well with people.
Hindi Medium will need good reviews and positive word of mouth initially to attract audience on its first day. Once that happens, it can witness growth over the weekend. The film will open with around 3-3.5 crore collections.
