Diwali – the grand festival season of India. Also, the most lucrative release date slot for Bollywood movies to capitalize on festive season and mint the maximum collections. That’s why film-makers announce their Diwali release dates even a year before to get the solo release. Sometimes, it works, sometimes it ends up in a clash.
Diwali is such a big occasion that it’s almost impossible to get a solo release as the opportunity to earn at box office during this time is tremendous. The population of 120 crore looking to have the best time, and watching a film with family-friends comes at top.
Since last 4-5 years, every Diwali, Bollywood has done a business of over 200 crore, sometimes by a single movie and sometimes, with 2 films. The big Diwali clash between Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar in 2012 and Shivaay and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016 is well known to all. This also proves why Diwali is the most appealing release date destination for film industry.
Films like Krrish 3, Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo showed how big a movie can earn if it gets a solo release in Diwali. All these 3 films collected 200+ crore.
Here’s the Box Office Performance of Bollywood Movies released During Diwali from 2011 to 2016:
|Year||Movie||Collections (In Crore)|
|2012||Jab Tak Hai Jaan||120.85|
|Son of Sardaar||105.03|
|2014||Happy New Year||205|
|2015||Prem Ratan Dhan Payo||210.16|
|2016||Ae Dil Hai Mushkil||112.14|
However, none of Diwali mega release has managed to touch the 300 crore milestone yet. This Diwali, Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again and Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar are releasing. It’s not a tough clash type scenario. Golmaal Again is an out and out entertainer while Secret Superstar is a content driven film.
The buzz for Golmaal Again is humongous. It has a massive chance to go past the 200 crore mark and if audience loves the film, it will surely achieve that mark.
