Bollywood Movies from January to March 2017: Hits as well as Disappointments

Bollywood has released around 20 movies so far in 2017 and the box office result overall is a mixed bag. We saw big movies getting Hit and some movies which couldn’t even recover their costs.

It was an average quarter for the industry as the footfalls in theaters were only evident for a select films. Let’s see the performance of these movies in 3 months:

100 Crore Club

The astonishing thing about these 3 months is that we saw 4 movies entering the 100 crore club. Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees (139 crore), Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil (121 crore), Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 (116.92 crore) and Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania (112.13 crore) won the hearts of audience and dominated the box office.

In fact, these are the only films which managed to attract a huge crowd in theaters.

Average Business

There are some films which were not big in buzz but still managed to do a decent business. The Ghazi Attack (19.80 crore) had a good 1st week and got a good appreciation for its war-at-sea concept. Vidyut Jammwal’s action thriller Commando 2 is probably a pleasant performer. It didn’t become a Hit but the crowd it attracted was good. Commando 2 collected 24.75 crore.

Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri was a mild performer but due to its low budget, it did a good business. So far it has collected 22.68 crore. Taapsee Pannu’s Naam Shabana has released this week. It is getting a good response and has collected 12 crore so far in 2 days.

Big Disappointments

Shahid Kapoor’s Rangoon was probably one of the biggest disappointments this quarter. Considering the stellar cast and Vishal Bhardwaj’s direction, it was expected to do a real impressive business but it completely failed. it could only mint 22 crore.

Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur’s Ok Jaanu was also a dismal performer with earning merely 23.60 crore.

Little Known Films

Films like Haraamkhor, Coffeee With D, Running Shaadi, Irada, Machine, Traaped and Aa Gaya Hero couldn’t make any mark at box office as the footfalls and buzz was very low.

Overall, these three months are good for big stars but small films were unable to mint impressive money. Let’s hope coming months will change that.
