Best Performances of Aamir Khan

(First Published on 18th December. Last Updated: 24th December, 2016)

Aamir Khan is one of the rare actors in Bollywood who has given memorable after memorable performances with each of his films and some of his movies are so great that they have become one of the best films not just in India but world over. The perfectionist of Bollywood, Aamir goes deep into his characters and they are full of sheer thrill and inspiration for any movie lover. He taught us that you don’t need masala in your movies to make it a box office success; just pure hard work is enough.

Here is my list of Aamir Khan’s best performances:

Rang De Basanti

This is my all-time favorite performance of Aamir Khan. I am sure, many of you have enjoyed a lot in your college days and just when you enter the real world, it seems harsh, That’s why Rang De Basanti is one of the most effective movies . Aamir as DJ is unstoppable. Ever flirty, funny to the core with his friends going night outs, and then his naughty behavior with Sue and the shoot was sparking and gives you the best time, Honestly, I didn’t want the film to ever end. ‘Maut ki ungli’, ‘Sue…kar mere man ko’, ‘Behen de take bacche gore honge ya kale’ – punches like these from Aamir that make this film a powerhouse of cinema.

Aamir has enacted different roles in this one. A full of life college guy ready to do anything for his friends, a helpless person after the tragedy hits his group and also a freedom fighter of pre-independent era (Chandrashekhar Azad) and he impresses with each one. It’s a delight to watch him.

Lagaan

Lagaan is not just one of the best cinemas of Bollywood; it is also the one that we are all proud of. Ashutosh Gowariker’s vision was grand and to accompany him is the actor who makes this vision into a glory. Understanding the role and carrying it with grace is the ability of a great actor. Aamir as Bhuvan is the one of top characters you will ever see in films. That rebel look on his face, his leadership to gather people to fight against the England empire by making a cricket team and the on pitch cricket performance were all electrifying. What emotions he carries with himself! Aamir’s acting was so powerful that you want to cheer, whistle and dance every time he hits a four, six or takes a wicket. This is the power of an honest and inspiring acting.

Sarfarosh

How can you not have Sarfarosh in your lifetime favorite movie list? ACP Rathod cleans terrorism with his aggression and clever tactics. Aamir excels as ACP where he first convinces his team to work with him. That scene of him with Inspector Saleem was powerful. Then, he also has a wonderful chemistry with Sonali Bendre. Aamir’s way of handling Naseeruddin Shah (Gulfam Hassan), the whole terrorism network was gripping and he single-handedly makes the film a thrilling affair. That end scene where he out-speaks Naseeruddin Shah by talking about the reality of terrorists was awesome.

Ghulam

If comedy is Aamir’s key strength, serious performance is his core acting prowess. Ghulam is a special role for Aamir where he plays the character of an underdog boxer Siddharth. He works for a local mafia Raunak and one day, he fights against Raunak and his injustice to liberate people from his slavery. Ghulam is brutal and Aamir doesn’t disappoint one bit. He carries the character of a boxer, his love and fun with Rani Mukerjee and finally, the bloodshed fight with Raunak in the end was the high point of acting in the film. Aamir is an actor with a full variety.

Dangal

A biopic on Mahavir Singh Phogat, Aamir Khan gave another best performance of his career with Dangal. Interesting thing about Dangal is that Aamir has a lead role but as a supporting person. This is not just a story of him but how he as Phogat trained his two daughters Geeta and Babita to become world class wrestling champions. Aamir’s character portrayal was brilliant. The way he dictates his dream upon his daughters was cunning and afterwards his care, pain and happiness to see his daughters winning the medals in wrestling was outstanding. Every frame and every expression of Aamir is a realistic magic to witness in Dangal and that’s why he is called the perfectionist of film industry.

Aamir Khan defined the COOL by Dil Chahta hai. His role as Akash won the whole generation and it is still the most loved film by youth. This is also the reason everyone wants to go to Goa with their friends and do all the ‘masti’ that Aamir did with his friends. Aamir’s silly and full of fun tricks to humiliate Saif and Akshaye Khanna, the way he falls for Preity Zinta and all this magic was realistic and relatable. Everyone wants to be that cool guy, thanks to Aamir’s perfect portrayal of that role. Aamir also showed that romance doesn’t have to be boring; his conversations with Shalini (Preity) were absolutely hilarious.

3 Idiots

3 Idiots is as funny, inspiring and realistic as a film can get. It’s a laugh riot of three engineering friends who defy the conventional education system and try to do something different. Aamir aka Rancho is hilarious with his creative and rebellistic behavior. His friendly chemistry with R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi was the best you will see in recent times. Also, his scenes with Virus (Boman Irani) are full of joy and I am sure everyone of you had such instances in your college lives. 3 idiots is not just fun but also inspires us to look at our lives and understand what we want to do; not follow the same traditional ways just because everyone is doing that. Cinema is an important means to convey such message and Aamir delivers that message perfectly.

Rangeela

It’s very rare that Ram Gopal Varma hires big stars in his movies but he cast Aamir Khan in Rangeela due to his amazing acting talent and Aamir made it a standard in a romantic genre. Tapori Aamir falls for an aspiring actress and their fun, love and fights are beautifully portrayed. Aamir’s dialogues like ‘Fan laga na’ ‘A/C chalu hai to idhar ghuma na’, ‘Kya thakela jagah hai, sara paisa furniture pe kharcha kiya kya?’ are still used by people in their daily conversations. His love for Mili, friendship and the problems are deeply enacted by him.

This film of 1993 showed that Aamir Khan is not just a good actor but a matured performer who can improvize with any role. Understating the narrative and giving a remarkable performance – this is what makes a great actor. Aamir carries the character of a family guy Rahul pretty amazingly. His serious portrayal of an uncle, head of a family and the problems he faces with the children were precise. Aamir was spontaneous and wins you with his acting. The love between him and Juhi Chawla was spot on.

Andaz Apna Apna

Films like Andaz Apna Apna are vintage and evergreen. You watch it million times but still won’t stop laughing. Aamir Khan’s role as Amar is one of the most hilarious characters in Bollywood history. How effortlessly he delivers those funny punches! ‘Aap Purush hi nahi, mahapurush hain’ kind of dialogues, his fun with Prem, Bajaj and Robert-Bhalla’s roles were brilliant and entertaining. This film became a classic comedy which still holds so much appeal and will do so for the times to come, thanks to the comic timing of Aamir.

Sanjay, a careless college guy, who is only interested in scoring girls, gets transformed into a person who wins a major bicycle tournament for his college. Aamir is unbeatable when he plays the funny character. His tricks with his college friends, plans to humiliate his brother and then a phase where he starts preparing for the bicycle tournament is perfectly portrayed by him. It’s because of him that the song ‘Nahi Samjhe Hain’ still inspires many people.

Ghajini

Sanjay Singhania, a person who cannot remember things for more than 15 minutes, decides to take revenge on a man who killed his wife. The original story of Christohper Nolan’s Memento but the way Aamir understood this role and his yield as a crazy person is equally powerful to the original film.

Just look at the way he delivers that crazy look, with all those tattoos on his body, A mad man hungry to kill. I loved that scene where he goes crazy when all his tattoos were removed. It takes a great actor to pull such roles with so much grit and emotions. Striking performance!

Written by Amole Gupte, this film is as great as it is important. Aamir plays the role of Professor Nikumbh who helps a dyslexic kid Ishaan realize his true potential. This is a different role for Aamir who had played lots of active characters but this role was very silent, calm and subtle. His patient performance, care for Ishaan and his methods to teach the students were beautiful. The film gives a sweet message to parents to let their kids explore their own talents. Aamir’s acting is the strong reason this film got a much needed attention.

PK

An alien comes to earth and learns our way of living and religion, that’s the story of PK. Aamir as alien is itself a wonderful thing to watch. But, he goes beyond that. I didn’t like PK that much but Aamir’s acting was top notch. His weird behavior as alien, then how he blends in, tries to find God and his emotional frustration was wilfully enacted. That is the statement of a great actor.

Aamir Khan is one of the best actors our industry and we hope he keeps giving such mesmerizing performances in future as well. Which are your favorite films of Aamir Khan?
