Director: Shashank Khaitan
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sahil Vaid
Wow! Badrinath Ki Dulhania is full of heart and guts. It has effectively managed to show us the mirror of our flawed marriage system and the shameful discrimination we exhibit between a man and a woman. What’s more important is that Shashank Khaitan has conveyed that message with a touch of entertainment so that it reaches the wider audience.
I don’t enjoy most of the love stories due to their typical and stale approach in storytelling and that’s why I enjoyed Badrinath Ki Dulhania because it has relatable narrative and it covers the comprehensive story of Badri, Vaidehi and their families in a matured way. Badri (Varun Dhawan) is a son of a wealthy businessman. He falls in love with Vaidehi (Alia Bhatt) during a wedding function and decides to marry her but Vaidehi is an ambitious girl.
As the story matures, we get to see the treatment of men towards women in their families and how dowry has been considered a birth right even in today’s times in Indian families. Shashank Khaitan (writer and director) doesn’t just talk about Badri-Vaidehi’s love story but covers the families, discrimination and the problems women have to face in this male dominated family system.
The character writing and inclusion of each of them at the right time made the film flow naturally. Khaitan has carefully developed Badri’s character that is from Jhansi and has that accent. His fun nature, careless and innocent love for Vaidehi works really well. Vaidehi is shown rightfully smart and bold. The trump card the director has perfectly used is Badri’s friend Somdev (Sahil Vaid). You will thoroughly enjoy his presence and his fights and silly punches that give the film a humoured vibe constantly. Like I said, the director intends to portray the reality but he also entertains enough to make it a worthwhile lesson while having a good time.

The film wonderfully shows different phases that every love story experiences such as initial flirting, matured understanding, fun associated with it, tragedies of heartbreak and eventual understanding of each other for who they really are and respecting their existence. In a modern world, men and women work and strive to achieve their dreams. There should be equal treatment to both the sexes as they are free to choose their life goals and that’s what Badrinath Ki Dulhania tells you essentially.
The screenplay brightens the film. Heavy in UP accent, every conversation between Badri and Vaidehi is precisely impressive. Badri’s constant love proposals to Vaidehi, her outsmarting him with intelligent questions are amusing. The highlight of the screenplay is also Badri-Somdev’s friendship. Their fights, teasing one another and insulting even in the face of difficulties will make you respect their friendship. Shashank Khaitan’s storytelling in the phase where Badri realizes Vaidehi’s bravery to do something for her and to have a strong future is brilliantly told. The locations of Jhansi and Kota give an authentic feel to the movie and make you connect with the narrative.
This is a Varun Dhawan film all the way. He is getting matured as an actor. From carrying that UP accent to perfectly delivering the role of a guy who passionately loves and understands his woman, Varun shines with great cinematic colors. His punches are hilarious when he is with his friend; his romance and conversation with Vaidehi are engaging. There are different shades we witness of him in the film. From a genuinely careless guy to his transformation into the person who endures the pain and stands for what his right, Varun excels completely.
Alia Bhatt is as always an excellent actress. She looks bold and smart who wants to achieve her dreams. She complements Varun in every situation with her funny as well serious acting. The scene in a bus where she hilariously outtalks Varun by asking him about the ‘Compound Interest’ is an example of her fine talent. Sahil Vaid as Somdev has to be one of the best friend characters in recent times. There are so many amazing dialogues written for him and he delivers them with equal passion. He is always there for his friend even when he hits him, insults him and Sahil takes the movie to a higher notch with his honest and funny portrayal.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is an effective movie which narrates the love story as well as shows the major flaws in our marriage system. Even in today’s times, our wrong attitude towards women and their existence is bravely told by Shashank Khaitan. It goes beyond the typical love drama and gives you valuable insights. Don’t miss it.
